Bristol’s Mining Heritage, 19th June 2024

A guided walk in Speedwell with Pete Insole.

Join industrial archaeology specialist Pete Insole on a fascinating walk around key sites in Speedwell, that tell the story of east Bristol’s recent mining past.

Coal mining was once the predominant industry in east Bristol and two of the last large pits closed less than 100 years ago.

However, only a few visible clues remain to an industry that once dominated the lives of the Speedwell community. This walk will explore the sites of the main pits and walk in the miners̥ footsteps to see not just where they worked, but where some of them lived and worshipped Рand other aspects of this historic landscape.

Pete Insole’s Speedwell walk will start at 7.00pm from the entrance to Brunel Academy (former Speedwell School) on Speedwell Road. The distance is 1.5-2 miles. There should be parking on nearby side streets such as Duncombe Road or Kingsmead Road.

Members will be sent booking details by email.
