So, must we “learn to live with urban congestion”? This provocative thought is the basis of our talk, by Steve Melia, transport planning academic and long-standing campaigner for sustainable transport. He has a record of challenging what he sees as myths and misconceptions that bedevil the search for effective solutions to our urban transport needs- so expect some received wisdom to be questioned.
How many times have you heard politicians claiming that the projects they support will “tackle congestion”? And yet, congestion rarely seems to improve, and never for very long. Why is that? What can transport planners and local authorities do to improve urban transport and local environments, and just as important: what can they not do?
The Speaker
Steve Melia is now Visiting Fellow in Transport and Planning at the University of the West of England, and was previously Senior Lecturer there for twelve years. He’s the author of Urban Transport Without the Hot Air (2015), among other books. Post (semi) retirement he still writes on transport matters online and in Bristol Cable, and has recently set up www.railwalks.co.uk, to encourage walking by rail.
