A Zoom presentation of the draft Western Harbour masterplan by consultants Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands.
Since 2019, various plans have been mooted, and consulted upon, for redeveloping the Western Harbour (aka Cumberland Basin). Now, a draft masterplan has been developed, and Bristol City Council is seeking views on it from across the city – including from Civic Society members. The aim is to transform the westernmost end of the Floating Harbour, an area spanning Cumberland Basin, Spike Island, Ashton Meadows, and the surrounding road network, into a vibrant and thriving area of the city
The plan proposes removing redundant access roads leaving a single spine road, thereby releasing some 2.5ha of land; replacing the Avon Fixed Bridge and repairing the Plimsoll Bridge; and building 750-1200 new homes. The proposals would create flood defences, while also providing space for nature, around 1000 new trees, improved connections for cyclists and pedestrians to the rest of the city, and a diverse range of new uses.
During the Autumn the project team gathered feedback on initial ideas for improving the area. This has now been considered alongside the findings from technical surveys, and a draft masterplan has been developed. Now, the project team want to talk you through the proposals and find out what you think.
Emily Price, Regeneration Manager from Bristol City Council will introduce the proposals, with the main presentation being given by Alex Lifschutz, from master planners Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands. There will be plenty of opportunity for questions.
And note also that the Society’s Transport & Placemaking Group will be reviewing the proposals at a meeting on 3 March – all members are welcome to join this group.
More information can be found at www.harbourhopes.co.uk including a five-minute film explaining the draft masterplan; the consultation is open now, until 9 March.
Please note that this event starts at 6.30, not our usual 7.30
Members and event subscribers will be invited by email to join the event.
