Liveable neighbourhoods are much talked about but what does this term mean? Is Bristol a liveable city?
Liveability has to take into account issues of housing, transport, street design, green spaces and creating places and communities for all ages. What does the latest research show about liveability and where are the gaps in evidence? Is policy — for example, encouraging more cycling and walking — fit for purpose in creating liveable neighbourhoods? What recommendations can we all bring together for the future of Bristol and future cities?
Using examples from Bristol and elsewhere, speakers will look at and debate what makes a liveable neighbourhood. The talks will cover transport and movement (Steve Melia), greening (Danni Sinnett), street interventions and social well-being (Mark Drane), the council’s contribution (Nicola Beech).
The speakers are:
- Steve Melia is a Senior Lecturer in Transport and Planning in the Centre for Transport and Society at UWE Bristol. His research interests are focussed on behaviour change, shared transport and the interaction between transport and spatial planning. Read more.
- Danni Sinnett is an environmental scientist with expertise in green infrastructure in the urban environment. She is an associate professor in the Centre for Sustainable Planning and Environments at UWE Bristol.
- Mark Drane has 15 years of experience in design practice. He is a doctoral researcher at the WHO Collaborating Centre for Healthy Urban Environments at UWE Bristol, and leads Urban Habitats, an urban design practice linking health and built environment.
