Bristol’s shape-shifting history: 26th March 2025

Six hundred and fifty years ago, Edward III granted Bristol by royal charter the status of ‘town and county’ – the only urban centre outside London to be honoured in this way.

The significant moments that have accompanied each expansion of Bristol’s boundaries in the intervening centuries have now been traced on a new ‘community atlas’, a project to celebrate the anniversary of King Edward’s charter.

Pete Insole’s illustrated talk explains how the community atlas project came about and how the Bristol we know today has been shaped and defined since 1373.

Pete Insole is Urban Design Team Manager in the Planning Department at Bristol City Council with nearly 30 years’ experience of working in heritage and place practices in Bristol.

The talk is in the Apostle Room of Clifton Cathedral and will start at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £5.

Civic Society members will be invited by email to book a place.
