In 1914 a 30-acre site in Bristol between Ashton Gate and Cumberland Basin was transformed into the Bristol International Exhibition, intended as an optimistic celebration of the achievements of Britain’s empire and dominions. Giant white pavilions, one a replica of Bristol Castle, housed the exhibits and other attractions included a roller coaster. But it soon hit financial difficulties, and when war was declared in August, it closed and was then used as a barracks, during both World War I and World War II.
The fascinating story of what became known as the White City will be unfolded for us by Clive Burlton, who is a publisher, author and local historian – and the author of a book on the subject, ‘Bristol’s Lost City’ (published by Bristol Books).
