The Iron Works, Silverthorne Lane

The Iron Works form plots 2 and 3 of the large hybrid Silverthorne Lane scheme that was considered as a planning application in 2020. It takes its name from the St Vincent’s Works that used to occupy the site. Revised plans have been submitted, which will lead to a new planning application.

The proposals are for five blocks of residential development for renting. The site borders the Feeder Canal. In our responses some years ago before the previous planning application, we did not support the height and mass of the ‘finger blocks’ facing the canal, but these are now a given. In our comments to the developer now, we supported the opening out to the canal of the public space between blocks 2 and 3, with the provision of a ferry stop, and the design and use of materials reflecting the heritage of the site. We made other comments which are dependent on seeing further details of the scheme.
