Unveiling of blue plaque: 8th November 2024

There will be an unveiling of a Bristol Civic Society Blue Plaque on Friday 8 November at 11.00am at 24 Congleton Road, St George, Bristol BS5 7AP. The King’s representative, Lord-Lieutenant Peaches Golding OBE, is guest of honour.

The plaque commemorates Acting Lance-Corporal Frederick George Room, born in Bristol, and awarded the Victoria Cross for outstanding gallantry in Belgium during the First World War.

The dedication will be visible from the pavement, but please note that as the pavement is fairly narrow, people congregating need to be careful of both traffic and pedestrians passing by.

A full report will be published on the BCS website and in the next edition of Better Bristol.

After the unveiling, there will be an informal gathering at nearby St Ambrose Church, 7 Stretford Avenue, BS5 7AN, to view war memorials dedicated to local residents, including Fred Room VC. Then there is an opportunity to view the brave soldier’s grave at Greenbank cemetery, half a mile away. Park in Greenbank View and take the footpath leading down into the cemetery.
